Sudbury is a city known for it's extensive mining history, having been struck by the 2nd largest meteor to ever hit the earth in what scientists are saying could very well be the meteor that all life on earth as we know it came from. It's a truly unique place with a rich cultural history and a lot of metal in the ground. It is safe to say that Sudbury has always crafted fine metals, as many great metal bands also come from Sudbury. The Asylum was built because there was a lack of venues for these metal bands to play and so the community got together and built something truly special and unique, what is now known as The Asylum!
Founded in 2015 as an all ages music venue by Mark and Shannon Howitt, The Asylum was custom built to provide a captivating entertainment exerience with great sound and visuals. At first there was not many shows as things continued to develop and renovations and upgrades to the venue continued to ensure that there could be the best possible experience by the bands that played The Asylum and the fans and customers who come out. Having toured in bands throughout most of North America and seeing many venues, Mark took what he learned from the road and put it into physical form with the help of friends, volunteers and members of Sudbury's music community. What evolved was the Asylum, a unique music venue in Northern Ontario which continues to grow and evolve.
The Asylum is located in the basement of the Sudbury Events Centre, formerly known as the Mine Mill Hall which was built by the local mining community just after World War II. The Sudbury Events Centre is dedicated to housing various events and activities ranging from music, sports, business and culture. The building itself has a long history, including intense worker riots and large scale local events, The Mine Mill Hall was a central location within the city of Sudbury. After the Mine Mill Hall left, it eventually became the Navy League Hall and had a lower deck bar that it's patrons could grab a cold one and relax from a hard days work just as in the old days. The entire basement was once a bar that catered to the large worker population and over time renovations to the building changed the set up and a smaller bar partition was kept in place, which eventually became a police bar called the Tin Inn. After the Navy League Hall left tenancy, it became what it is known as today, the Sudbury Events Centre.
